History

Historical Context

BRICS traces its roots to Russian foreign minister Yevgeny Primakov’s 1998 proposal and the 2001 ‘BRIC’ label by economist Jim O’Neill. The inaugural leaders’ summit in Yekaterinburg on 16 June 2009—hosted by Medvedev with Lula, Singh and Hu—represented about 15 % of world GDP. That foundation guides the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla in New Delhi in October 2026.
