Incident Overview
On October 9, 43-year-old advocate Sriram (also reported as Sri Ram) collapsed on Nagarabhavi Ring Road in Bengaluru and was taken to a private hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police initially recorded an “unnatural death” and considered a possible heart attack, but Sriram’s relatives noted visible injury marks and filed a complaint, prompting a post-mortem. The examination revealed a severe head injury and a blood clot in the brain, leading investigators to upgrade the case to murder.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Annapoorneshwarinagar police identified the alleged assailant as 31-year-old auto-rickshaw driver Pruthiraj (also spelled Prithviraj; identified as Pruthviraj Appajigowda in one report), a resident of Gollarahatti on Magadi Road. According to the investigating officer, Sriram had approached the driver near Ambedkar College for a ride, disputed the fare, and walked away. The driver allegedly followed, assaulted Sriram, and pushed him to the ground, causing the fatal head injury. Police traced the vehicle, located Pruthiraj, and placed him in judicial custody.
Additional Allegations
Investigators are also probing reports that other auto-rickshaw drivers were present during the confrontation. Separate inquiries focus on the alleged disappearance of Sriram’s mobile phone and a small amount of cash after the incident, though no further details have been released.
Official Statements
The same department announced that the driver has been remanded in custody while the broader probe continues.
Potential Impact
The case underscores heightened scrutiny of fare-related disputes in Bengaluru’s congested auto-rickshaw market and may prompt law-enforcement agencies to monitor similar altercations more closely. It also raises questions about the safety of pedestrians and commuters following night-time travel, potentially influencing future municipal regulations on auto-rickshaw operations.
