The Brutal Attack

On a Saturday morning in the Daba area of Ludhiana, 35-year-old Shakti Singh, alias Bhoora (also reported as Bhura), was attacked by a group of men at the house of a mutual associate. The assailants entered with swords and other sharp-edged weapons, beat Singh and cut off his right hand at the wrist. They placed the severed hand in a polythene bag, handed it to a shopkeeper on Street 9 in Satguru Nagar and ordered the shopkeeper to deliver the package to Singh’s family. Singh was rushed to the civil hospital but died from massive blood loss.

Background & Context

Police investigations indicate that Singh and the attackers knew each other well. Earlier that night, Singh, the accused and several others had gathered at the residence of a common associate identified as Vicky. An argument—reported in one account as over a woman—escalated into the violent assault the next morning. Both Singh and the accused have extensive criminal histories; Singh faced at least 12 pending cases, while each accused also has roughly a dozen cases on record.

Data & Statistics

  • Victim: Shakti Singh, 35, resident of Basant Nagar, Ludhiana.
  • Injuries: Right hand severed at the wrist; death caused by excessive blood loss.
  • Criminal records: Approximately 12 cases registered against Singh; a similar number for each accused.
  • Arrests: Sources differ on the number of suspects apprehended—reports cite one, two, or seven arrests.

Official Statements & Responses

Assistant Commissioner of Police Roopdeep Kaur said preliminary investigations point to “personal enmity” as the likely trigger. She added that the victims and the accused had spent the previous night together, and a spat on Saturday morning led to the attack.

Station House Officer Inspector Jatinder Kumar confirmed that CCTV footage shows the suspects arriving on two motorcycles to deliver the severed hand to the shopkeeper. He reiterated that the case is being treated as a murder with a motive rooted in an old rivalry.

Police have registered a murder case against the alleged perpetrators and continue to search for the remaining suspects.

Conflicting Reports & Gaps

  • Number of arrests: One source reports that a single accused, identified as Dalbir Singh, has been arrested while a hunt continues for six others. Another outlet states that two suspects were taken into custody. A third report claims that seven men have been arrested.
  • Identity of the primary accused: The arrested individual is named Dalbir Singh in some accounts, while other reports cite Gurmit Singh CD as the main suspect.
  • Weapon description: Some articles describe the weapons as swords, others refer to a “datar” (a short sickle) or simply “sharp-edged weapons.”
  • Exact motive: While police suspect an old rivalry, the precise trigger—whether a dispute over a woman, a comment about a sister, or another personal grievance—remains unconfirmed.
