History

Historical Context

The 2026 Bahamas rescue by the Royal Bahamas Police echoes the large-scale coordination first highlighted after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when the U.S. Coast Guard rescued over 33,500 people and FEMA deployed thousands of responders. That disaster also spurred the growth of public crowdfunding, a model GoFundMe used in October 2026 to raise nearly £9,000 for the children.
