History

Historical Context

In May 1968, France erupted in nationwide protests that forced President Charles de Gaulle to dissolve the National Assembly. Over 10 million demonstrators flooded Paris, while the Paris Police Prefecture mobilized 30,000 officers and deployed armored vehicles. Today’s NFL showdown at Stade de France mirrors that era’s massive crowds, as 78,488 fans gathered amid 410,000 nationwide protesters and 70,000 police deployed. The legacy of 1968 compels the U.S. State Department to issue heightened travel alerts, underscoring enduring security challenges for foreign visitors.
