Apple Stores Deploy In-Box iPhone Scanner to Reduce Return Fraud

By Drooid · · How we work

New Return-Check Device Deployed

Apple has begun equipping its retail locations with a handheld scanner that can read an iPhone inside its sealed box and run diagnostics to confirm the device is intact. The tool allows employees to verify the phone without breaking the packaging, after which a cleared unit can be returned directly to inventory. The hardware builds on the Pre-sto technology Apple previously used to install software updates on devices before they left the store.

Return-Fraud Problem Prompting the Solution

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple has faced a growing issue in which some customers purchase iPhones or other products, remove accessories, strip components, or take the entire device, and then attempt to return the sealed box. In many cases the removed parts are resold in bulk. Prior to the scanner’s introduction, staff were instructed to open every returned box for inspection, a practice that forced even legitimate returns to be sent to a warehouse for processing, delaying restocking.

Apple’s Response and Rollout

Apple’s internal policy, as described by Gurman, required retail employees to open packaging and verify contents, even when the seal appeared intact. The new scanner, which began arriving in early October and was rolled out to stores earlier this month, lets employees perform a non-intrusive check. If the device passes the diagnostic scan, the box remains sealed and can be placed back on the sales floor, reducing waste and inventory loss.

Operational Impact and Future Plans

The scanner’s deployment is expected to cut down on wasted inventory caused by fraudulent returns and streamline the handling of legitimate returns by eliminating the need to break seals. Apple continues to distribute the devices to additional stores, with the company indicating that the rollout will proceed until all locations have the capability to perform in-box diagnostics.
