History

Historical Context

Manchester United’s leadership turmoil echoes past disruptions, such as Rio Ferdinand’s eight-month ban in 2004 after missing a drugs test, which left Nemanja Vidic as interim captain during a winless spell. Today, Michael Carrick has benched current captain Bruno Fernandes amid a seven-game slump, reviving a pattern that has seen 46 different club captains since the team’s 1882 founding.
