History

Historical Context

In November 1986, United’s board under chairman Martin Edwards dismissed Ron Atkinson after a 4-1 League Cup defeat to Southampton and installed Aberdeen’s Alex Ferguson, who steadied the club and finished the season 11th. Today, after a 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is consulting Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada on Michael Carrick’s future, echoing the 1986 board intervention.
