Fatal Shooting of Alyssa Wilson
On October 14, 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson was driving her Buick Encore southbound on Interstate 170 in Overland, Missouri, en route to a Halloween event at the St. Louis Zoo. A single shot fired from a vehicle struck her in the back, causing her to lose control and collide with a concrete median. She was pronounced dead at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Prosecutors identified the shooter as Willie James Herndon, 43, of Texas, who had no known relationship to the teen. Wilson’s father, Robert Hickman, described the loss as “senseless” and noted that she had only 60 days before reaching adulthood and a planned family vacation to Disney.
Earlier Shooting on October 11 and Subsequent Arrest
Three days earlier, on October 11, St. Louis metropolitan police received a report of a vehicle being shot just after exiting Interstate 55. Surveillance captured a white SUV matching the description of Herndon’s Buick Enclave, and a shell casing was recovered. Federal investigators later linked the same vehicle to the October 14 scene and traced it to a Days Inn in Caseyville, Illinois, on October 16. While police were speaking with Herndon’s wife, Taiya Herndon, Willie Herndon emerged from the hotel room and fled, shouting about a shooting. He was apprehended after a brief pursuit.
Federal and State Charges
Prosecutors in Illinois have charged Herndon with felon-in-possession of a firearm after finding an ABC-15 rifle, matching ammunition, a gas-station receipt, two license plates, and handwritten notes in the hotel room. In Missouri, he faces first-degree murder and armed criminal action charges for Wilson’s death. Herndon’s federal public defender has not responded to requests for comment.
Official Reactions
The father of the victim publicly expressed grief and called the act “senseless.” Prosecutors emphasized that ballistics testing is ongoing to confirm whether the same weapon was used in both incidents. No comment was provided by Herndon’s legal representation.
