History

Historical Context

The 1970 NFL-AFL merger created the AFC and NFC and, through the first collective-bargaining agreement, fixed a 53-player roster limit that still governs the league. In 2024 the San Francisco 49ers, hampered by injuries to Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and Mike Evans, must trim their squad to that 53-man ceiling under coach Kyle Shanahan as they chase a playoff spot.
