History

Historical Context

During the 1995-96 campaign Sir John Hall funded roughly £16 million of signings, propelling Newcastle to a 12-point league lead by 20 January and a second-place finish – their best in 69 years. Yet defensive frailties saw the title slip to Manchester United, fueling criticism of manager Kevin Keegan. The club’s 2024 £150 million midfield rebuild echoes that costly, title-chasing gamble.
