History

Historical Context

The 2005 fallout between Roy Keane and Sir Alex Ferguson, which ended with Keane leaving United after a public feud, showed how captaincy disputes can destabilise the club; Keane captained the side from 1997 and won four Premier League titles. In 2024, Bruno Fernandes was dropped by Michael Carrick and Harry Maguire called for change while United sit 16th, echoing that pattern of internal dissent.
