History

Historical Context

After Florentino Pérez won the 2000 presidential election, he revived the Galáctico policy first created by Santiago Bernabéu, selling the Ciudad Deportiva to fund world-record signings such as Luis Figo for €60 million and Zinedine Zidane for €75 million. Between 2000 and 2006 Real Madrid spent roughly €1.5 billion on stars, a strategy that later sparked legal probes and fuels today’s debates with Barcelona over finances and rivalry.
