Trappes Shooting and Psychiatric Transfer

On October 23, a 39-year-old man identified as Kevin T. opened fire from a vehicle in Trappes and the neighboring town of La Verrière, about 30 km southwest of Paris. Police arrested him shortly after the attack. The French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) announced on October 25 that his police custody was suspended for “psychiatric reasons” and that he was transferred to the psychiatric unit of the Paris police prefecture for an observation period that could last up to 48 hours. The measure is intended to assess whether his psychiatric condition permits continued questioning.

Suspect Background and Motive

Investigators discovered a copy of Adolf Hitler’s *Mein Kampf* alongside a Bible and a Quran in Kevin T.’s home in Plaisir. A source close to the probe reported that the residence was rigged with three gas cylinders and electrical wiring connected to a timer. Toxicology tests found cannabis and cocaine in his blood. According to Le Monde, the suspect told police he wanted to target people from immigrant backgrounds to “avenge” shopkeepers whose premises were looted on October 17, when violent protests swept France.

Official Reactions

President Emmanuel Macron, who visited Trappes on the day of the attack, described the incident as a “racist terrorist attack.” The mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, and the prefect of Yvelines, Brice Blondel, were also present at the site. The victim’s family has questioned whether authorities had adequately monitored Kevin T., noting that he was previously known to law-enforcement.

Data and Ongoing Investigation

The shooting left one person dead—a 26-year-old man of Congolese origin, Pengo Bossio Wangi, described as a promising French MMA fighter—and five injured, including a 12-year-old girl who was hit eight times and remains in critical condition. Police recovered a World-War-II-era submachine gun and tear-gas grenades from the suspect’s car. Four members of his family and social circle continue to be questioned.

Political Context and Implications

The attack occurs amid deep social divisions and a looming national election, with far-right candidate Marine Le Pen leading in the polls. Authorities’ decision to place the suspect under psychiatric observation has sparked debate over security procedures and the handling of extremist violence ahead of the vote.
