History

Historical Context

In April 1988, after the Iranian mine that crippled the frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts on 14 April, the U.S. Navy launched Operation Praying Mantis, sinking an Iranian frigate, a missile boat and two oil platforms and killing two Marine aviators. The raid pressured Iran toward a July cease-fire in the Iran-Iraq War. Today’s talk of renewed strikes and embassy cuts echoes that 1988 showdown.
