Senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy warned a “trifecta” of large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain across southeast Queensland.
Computer models forecast supercell thunderstorms with winds exceeding 125 km/h and hail larger than 5 cm on Monday.
The Bureau of Meteorology linked the severe-storm risk to a stagnant, moisture-laden air mass lingering for a week.

History

Historical Context

The January 1974 Brisbane flood, intensified by Cyclone Wanda, inundated 6,700 homes and killed 16 people, prompting Premier Joh Bjelke-Petersen to declare a state of emergency. In its wake the government planned the Wivenhoe Dam with flood-mitigation capacity, a cornerstone of Queensland’s modern flood-response framework that was tested again during the 2010-11 floods.
