History

Historical Context

The Supreme Court’s 1987 oleum-gas-leak ruling, filed by environmental lawyer M. C. Mehta, imposed absolute liability on polluters and spurred nationwide safety codes. That judicial activism later shaped the 1996 Taj Trapezium judgment, which protected a 10,400 km² heritage zone. Today Delhi’s disaster officials cite those precedents while auditing illegal floor additions that caused a roof collapse.
