History

Historical Context

On October 29 1999, the Odisha super-cyclone struck India, killing over 10,000 people and flooding vast swaths of the eastern state. The Indian Meteorological Department issued a nationwide cyclone warning, prompting the Odisha government and Bhubaneswar schools to suspend classes for three days, affecting 1.2 million students. Today's October 26 2026 school closures across Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry echo that 1999 precedent, as authorities cite severe rain, thunderstorms and cyclone warnings. The repeated disruption underscores India's need for improved early-warning systems and resilient infrastructure to safeguard millions of students from climate-driven hazards.
