Storm Boelo Brings High Winds to London
A severe windstorm, identified as Storm Boelo, has been battering the United Kingdom, prompting an amber-level warning that began on Saturday evening. The Met Office reported wind speeds of 60–70 mph across affected areas. The storm has also left more than 82,000 homes without electricity, underscoring the widespread disruption.
Scaffold Collapse Injures Two Pedestrians
At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, a section of scaffolding at a building site on Streatham High Road gave way under the high-wind conditions. Two pedestrians walking along the road were struck by falling metal poles and coverings. Passersby managed to pull the victims from the wreckage before emergency crews arrived. The incident left both individuals trapped briefly before being rescued.
Emergency Services Respond
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson explained that the brigade’s control officers received the first of five emergency calls at 13:31 and dispatched crews from Tooting, Lewisham, West Norwood and surrounding stations. The spokesperson added that firefighters arrived after the pedestrians had already been freed by bystanders.
A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said the service sent ambulance crews, an incident response officer and paramedics from its Hazardous Area Response Team to the scene. The spokesperson noted that the two patients received treatment on site and were subsequently transported to hospital.
Broader Effects of the Storm
Beyond the scaffold incident, Storm Boelo continues to impact London and surrounding regions. The high winds have caused additional hazards, including fallen trees and damaged infrastructure, contributing to the ongoing power outages and prompting heightened alerts from local authorities. The event highlights the challenges emergency responders face when severe weather compromises construction sites and public safety.
