History

Historical Context

The 2000 presidential race hinged on a Florida recount that the Supreme Court halted on Dec 12, 2000, leaving George W. Bush ahead by 537 votes out of six million (0.009%). The ruling spurred the Help America Vote Act and heightened scrutiny of ballot integrity. In 2026, Barack Obama’s Cleveland rally warned that ICE deployments near polling sites and a judge’s pause on voting investigations echo those disputes.
