U.S. Embassy Evacuates

The U.S. Embassy ordered non-emergency staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia, effective Oct 23, citing Houthi threats.
Saudi coalition intercepted two drones and a missile targeting Riyadh and a cruise missile aimed at Khamis Mushait.
Debris from the intercepted weapons fell in Mecca, Medina, Jeddah and Taif, injuring civilians and damaging buildings.
Oil prices rose to a six-month high on Friday as Houthi attacks and U.S.–Israel strike warnings spooked markets.

History

Historical Context

During the 1991 Gulf War, Iraq fired approximately 88 Scud missiles at Saudi cities, prompting a multinational defensive response. Coalition forces, led by the United States, deployed over 500,000 troops and stationed 1,200 Patriot batteries across Riyadh, Jeddah, and Dhahran. Similarly, the 2027 AFC Asian Cup’s eight-stadium plan in Riyadh, Jeddah, and Al-Khobar now faces potential postponement as Houthi drone and missile threats echo past attacks. These recurring security challenges compel foreign embassies, like the U.S. mission, to evacuate staff and drive oil prices above $80 per barrel, underscoring regional volatility’s economic impact.
