History

Historical Context

After two decades of limited trade and U.S.-driven Taiwan ties, Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka’s September 29 1972 visit to Beijing and the Joint Communiqué with Premier Zhou Enlai formally ended the state of war and opened a framework for Japan-China cooperation. That precedent underpins former Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda’s 2026 outreach to former President Hu Jintao, echoing the 1972 normalization.
