History

Historical Context

In 1974 Congress enacted the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act, signing it into law with President Richard Nixon to run year-round DST from Jan 6 until the experiment was halted on Oct 27 because winter mornings were dark. The oil-crisis-driven trial showed only a 1 % electricity drop, and today the bipartisan Sunshine Protection Act revives that energy-saving rationale to end seasonal clock changes.
