History

Historical Context

The West Wing began as a temporary office in 1902 when Congress approved over $500,000 for Theodore Roosevelt’s expansion, and Taft added the first Oval Office in 1909. Major overhauls followed the 1929 fire, FDR’s 1933 redesign, and the 1948 structural crisis that led to a $5.4 million reconstruction completed in 1951. These recurring upgrades have shaped today’s scrutiny of costly presidential renovations.
