History

Historical Context

In 1973 the Nobel Committee awarded the Peace Prize to U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Lê Duc Tho for the Paris Peace Accords. Tho declined, Kissinger accepted in absentia and tried to return it after the 1975 fall of Saigon; Norwegian committee members resigned and protests erupted. The $65,000 prize still fuels skepticism when leaders such as Donald Trump claim Nobel peace honors.
