Incident Details

On the early morning of September 15 2023, Joseph Nixon, 43, entered the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool during his brother’s wedding reception. While Jack Surpree was serving as best man, Nixon and another man, Louise Coe, approached him and began shouting. Nixon asked Surpree whether he supported Palestine and, after being ignored, whether he supported Israel, before making a clear antisemitic remark. The confrontation lasted seven to eight minutes, during which Surpree and his teenage sister felt threatened. Police arrested Nixon after the incident.

Court Outcome and Penalties

Liverpool Magistrates’ Court convicted Nixon of racially or religiously aggravated intentional harassment. The magistrates imposed an 18-month community order, requiring 300 hours of unpaid work. Financial penalties included a £114 surcharge, £650 in court costs and £150 in compensation to Jack Surpree.

Official Statements & Responses

Defence solicitor Simon Pook told the court that Nixon was under “serious and significant stress,” caring for elderly parents who later died and experiencing a marital breakdown. The court’s sentencing reflected the aggravated nature of the harassment.
