History

Historical Context

Since the Royal British Legion launched its Poppy Appeal, the red poppy has faced controversy. Anti-war protests targeted it in 1993 over a video-game cover, a Channel 4 presenter denounced “poppy fascism” in 2006, and veterans complained about politicisation in 2010. That year the Legion shipped 48 million poppies, highlighting its scale; the refusal by Wetherspoon staff in Gosport to admit veterans wearing poppies reflects the debate.
