History

Historical Context

Commissioner Cathy Engelbert’s decision to shift Game 6 of the Atlanta Dream to the 17,000-seat State Farm Arena mirrors the WNBA’s original 1997 strategy of staging games in large NBA-affiliated venues. The league launched with eight teams, the Houston Comets winning the first championship, and secured a $30 million NBC TV deal, setting a precedent for growth that continues through today’s 15-team, multi-market footprint.
