History

Historical Context

The Reichstag fire of 27 February 1933 razed Germany’s parliamentary building, enabling Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party to suspend civil liberties through the Reichstag Fire Decree. Police and fire crews, including 1,200 Berlin firefighters, battled the blaze for roughly 30 minutes before the roof collapsed, causing damage estimated at 1.5 million Reichsmarks. Similarly, the 2026 arson at Bavaria’s Kehlsteinhaus—once Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest perched at 1,834 meters—prompted over 200 firefighters to confront an unsalvageable inferno. Both incidents illustrate how politically charged arsons of symbolic structures can catalyze emergency responses, trigger investigations into extremist motives, and may reignite debates over protecting heritage sites from such attacks.
