The Court Verdict
Wolverhampton Crown Court found 21-year-old Jashan Singh guilty of murder after a night of violence on the early hours of 22 October. The court also convicted him of perverting the course of justice. Two other men, Prabhjot Singh (18) and Mohit Singh (18), were each found guilty of perverting the course of justice; Prabhjot had previously pleaded guilty to violent disorder.
Sequence of the Attack
The victim, Navpreet Singh, 26, was celebrating the final day of Diwali with friends in Phoenix Park when a confrontation erupted with another group. According to police, Prabhjot Singh struck Navpreet with an iron rod after a friend was attacked at around 01:00 BST. Navpreet got to a nearby car, kicked its headlight, and was then knocked down by Jashan Singh, who drove over him with the front tyres and subsequently reversed, causing fatal injuries. Navpreet, a married man with a pregnant wife, died shortly after reaching hospital.
After the incident, Jashan drove the vehicle away, first to a secluded industrial estate in Willenhall where he and Mohit Singh swapped clothing to hinder identification. He later travelled near Coventry, Heathrow and Stansted airports, changed SIM cards and phones, and was arrested two days later in Bicester. During the investigation he altered his account, first claiming Navpreet was still standing when he left, then stating he was merely a passenger and that the reversal was accidental.
