Incident Details
Early Monday morning, police were dispatched to the Dashmesh Cultural Centre on Martindale Boulevard after a man was found lying in front of the centre’s parking-lot entrance. Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward of the Calgary Police Traffic Unit explained that a driver attempting to turn into the lot struck the pedestrian. The driver, a man in his 50s, remained at the scene. The victim, who was wearing dark clothing, was taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition and was later pronounced dead.
Official Responses
The Calgary Police Traffic Unit indicated that the driver did not see the pedestrian because of darkness and the victim’s dark attire, and that the driver initially believed the obstruction was a traffic-calming device rather than a person. The Dashmesh Cultural Centre issued a statement expressing deep sadness over the incident and extending thoughts and prayers to the victim’s family. Police have asked anyone with eyewitness accounts or dash-cam footage to contact the non-emergency line at 266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.
Traffic Fatality Context
According to police, the victim’s death is the ninth pedestrian fatality in Calgary this year and the 32nd traffic-related fatality recorded in 2026. These figures place the incident within a broader pattern of pedestrian deaths in the city.
Ongoing Investigation
The investigation remains active. Authorities are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the driver’s turn, the lighting conditions, and any available video evidence to determine why the driver failed to see the pedestrian. No charges have been announced pending the outcome of the inquiry.
