Google Adds ‘Plus’ Redesign to Gemini Live on Android

By Drooid · · How we work

Updated Interface Features

Google has introduced a small “plus” redesign to Gemini Live on Android. Activating Gemini Live now displays a new plus button on the left side of the screen. Tapping the button opens a carousel that offers four actions: Share screen, Photos, Files, and Drive. The camera button has been relocated next to the waveform, while the microphone mute switch and close button remain on the right. The redesign eliminates the previous requirement to add items to the Gemini overlay before going Live, streamlining the process for attaching media.

Context of Recent Interface Changes

The redesign follows other major interface updates rolled out earlier this month across Google’s suite of apps. While the Android version now includes the plus menu, the feature is not yet available on iOS, and it does not appear when Gemini Live is launched directly from the Gemini overlay.

Availability and Version Details

Google confirms that the plus menu is included in the stable release of the Google app, version 17.68. The update is limited to Android devices; iOS users must wait for a future release. Additionally, the new menu cannot be accessed when Live is started from the Gemini overlay, requiring users to open Gemini Live first.

Expected Impact for Users

By consolidating media-sharing options into a single plus button, the redesign aims to make it quicker for users to add photos, files, or Drive content during a live session. The only added step is an extra screen-share prompt, while the repositioned camera button may improve visual ergonomics. Overall, the change is positioned as a usability enhancement for Android users of Gemini Live.
