History

Historical Context

The 1994 Republican Revolution—marked by Newt Gingrich’s Contract with America and a 54-seat swing that gave Republicans control of the Senate for the first time since 1954—shifted Southern white conservatives into the GOP and cemented partisan strongholds. Those entrenched alignments still drive Senate battles, as seen in 2026 Mississippi where Donald Trump backs Republican Cindy Hyde-Smith and Barack Obama supports Democrat Jon Ossoff.
