History

Historical Context

The Lexington Club, a San Francisco lesbian bar, closed in 2015 after 15 years, marking a watershed in LGBTQ venue loss. Founded by Lillian Faderman and run by the San Francisco Lesbian Community Center, it faced a $200,000 debt and a 30% patronage decline. Similarly, Last Ditch announced an October 26, 2026 soft closure, listing $70,000 of assets while a fundraiser exceeded its $150,000 goal by community donors. These closures underscore a broader erosion of lesbian spaces, prompting activists to champion cooperative ownership models to sustain cultural hubs.
