New York Democrats Question Bruce Blakeman’s Campaign Finance Records

Reported Gaps and Transaction Details
A POLITICO analysis found that the Bruce Blakeman gubernatorial campaign’s September-month checking-account balance was reported at roughly $1.7 million, while a filing with the New York State Board of Elections listed only about $178,000. The review identified dozens of transactions absent from the disclosures, including a $13,500 check dated July 29 that lacked a recorded recipient. Additional unreported items cited were an $18,000 wire from actress Lois Robbins in early September and an $18,000 wire from campaign finance chair Howard Fensterman in July. The campaign did not reply to POLITICO’s request for clarification.
Official Responses from Campaign and Democrats
Democratic spokesperson Addison Dick publicly demanded an explanation for the discrepancies. Campaign spokesperson Madison Spanodemos later said the reporting errors had been corrected and that amended filings now reflected eligible contributions. She attributed the earlier complications to a dispute over Blakeman’s eligibility for public matching funds. The campaign has not provided a detailed item-by-item reconciliation of the missing entries.
Potential Impact on Public Matching Funds
New York Focus reported that the campaign’s requests for public matching funds were tied to more than 2,600 donations deemed ineligible. If approved, those claims could have generated over $860,000 in state matching money. The state elections board explained that bipartisan staff review each claim before funds are disbursed and that any improperly paid funds can be recovered later.
Ongoing Scrutiny and Unresolved Issues
The same analysis noted repeated revisions to the campaign’s July cash balance—initially $4.7 million, later adjusted to $6.1 million, and then to $4.3 million in August. Additionally, the campaign was reported to have received about $360,000 in contributions that exceeded legal limits and still required return. An unusual refund involved a donor who gave $1 in July and received $780.76 back, which the campaign said resulted from an accidental duplicate entry. As of the latest filing, the disclosures have not been amended to identify which transactions were legitimate.
Next Steps
State election officials continue to monitor the Blakeman campaign’s filings. The Board of Elections indicated that any further ineligible claims identified during review could lead to the recovery of previously issued public funds. Democrats have pledged to keep pressuring the campaign for full transparency as the November gubernatorial race approaches.
