History

Historical Context

The 16 December 2012 gang-rape of Jyoti Singh in Delhi sparked nationwide protests, prompting the government to form the Justice Verma Committee on 22 December 2012 and pass the Criminal Law (Amendment) Act 2013, which created fast-track courts for sexual offences. Today, Kolkata Police’s arrest of four suspects in the Behala assault shows that the 2012 reforms continue to shape India’s response to violent crimes.
