History

Historical Context

In 2013 CARICOM created the Reparations Commission, building on a 2004 Jamaican activist demand and Barbados’s 12-member task force launched in 2012, to press former colonial powers for slavery reparations. The commission issued a ten-point plan in 2014 and, after Jamaica prepared a Privy Council case for 2027, King Charles III’s 2024 tour with Queen Camilla and UN Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey revived those demands.
