History

Historical Context

During Israel’s 2008-2009 Gaza offensive, known as Operation Cast Lead, the Israeli military launched over 3,000 airstrikes, killing an estimated 1,400 Palestinians. The United Nations reported that 95 % of Gaza’s schools were damaged and that 13,000 homes were destroyed, prompting a $1.5 billion reconstruction appeal. Similarly, the October 26 2026 Israeli airstrike on Al-Mawasi camp killed Hamas commander Alaa Arshi, Islamic Jihad operative Karam Abu Butaihan, and three civilians, echoing earlier civilian-harm claims. These recurring patterns reinforce international calls for stricter compliance with UN Security Council resolutions and renewed humanitarian corridors to protect Gaza’s civilians and institutions.
