History

Historical Context

In 2001, Michael Owen captured the Men’s Ballon d’Or, becoming the first English player to win the award since its inception in 1956. The English Football Association recorded Owen’s 19-goal Premier League season, while UEFA noted his 5-goal World Cup performance, boosting England’s global profile. Harry Kane’s 2026 Ballon d’Or triumph mirrors Owen’s breakthrough, as Kane’s 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England echo the earlier English resurgence. The repeat English victory revitalizes the Premier League’s marketability, prompting sponsors like Nike to forecast a 12% revenue rise and inspiring youth participation nationwide.
