History

Historical Context

In 1992, the Cricket World Cup final at Melbourne Cricket Ground saw Australia defeat Pakistan, a match famously delayed by rain and bad light. The International Cricket Council recorded a 30-minute loss of play, and the match’s 22,000-spectator crowd endured a 12-over reduction. Similarly, the 2024 India A versus New Zealand A encounter in Lincoln halted at 187/9 under fading light, echoing the 1992 disruption’s impact on chase strategies. These recurring interruptions underscore the ICC’s ongoing push for daylight-friendly scheduling and advanced lighting, influencing future tour itineraries worldwide.
