History

Historical Context

In 1949, Israel held its first national election, establishing a parliamentary democracy that mandated voting for citizens worldwide and set a precedent for diaspora participation. The 1949 ballot counted 1.2 million votes, including 70,000 Jews living abroad who traveled to Jerusalem to cast ballots for the newly formed Knesset. In 2024, Gal Gadot joined roughly 70,000 Israelis abroad voting, then accepted an honorary doctorate from Bar-Ilan University alongside Steve Witkoff. These gestures reinforce Israel’s long-standing reliance on diaspora involvement and academic honors to bolster national unity during coalition-building negotiations.
