History

Historical Context

The 1999 NBA collective bargaining agreement introduced a $15 million disabled-player exception, allowing teams to replace injured stars without breaching the salary cap. When the Oklahoma City Thunder lost Jalen Williams to a fractured ankle in 2024, GM Sam Presti activated a $15 million DPE and three trade exceptions totaling $38.3 million. Similarly, fans at Paycom Center rallied with handmade #8 signs, while Mayor David Holt and Coach Mark Daigneault echoed the somber mood that followed past injury-driven roster upheavals. The precedent shows that severe injuries can reshape a franchise’s financial strategy, prompting immediate trades and long-term roster retooling across the league.
