On 29 October 1999 a super-cyclonic storm struck Odisha, India, killing roughly 10,000 people. The disaster came amid a year of extreme weather, including the May 3 1999 Oklahoma tornado outbreak that spawned 140 tornadoes across the Southern Plains and the 26 December 1999 Cyclone Lothar in Europe that killed about 140 people. These events highlighted the global scale of 1999’s severe storm season.
