History

Historical Context

In October 1993, U.S. Rangers and Delta Force fought the Battle of Mogadishu, part of Operation Gothic Serpent, losing 18 soldiers and wounding 73 as UNOSOM II’s 20,000-troop mission faltered. The defeat spurred U.S. “Somalia Syndrome,” prompting reliance on African Union forces and limited air strikes in later interventions. Today President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s National Armed Forces launch Operation Banooda against Al Shabaab, echoing the earlier foreign-backed offensives.
