Summary

Bishnoi Video Trials

Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita mandates the isolation regime for high-risk inmates.
Sabarmati prison officials say the regime prevents intra-block communication among those inmates.
All of Bishnoi’s court appearances occur via video link, eliminating physical courtroom presence.
His only authorized external contact is his lawyer, who meets him through monitored video calls.

History

Historical Context

U.S. courts have long expanded prisoners’ due-process rights, beginning with Morrissey v. Brewer (1972), which required neutral hearings before parole revocation, and Wolff v. McDonnell (1974), which set procedural safeguards for prison discipline. This judicial trajectory mirrors India’s recent move toward ultra-secure inmate management, illustrating a global trend of courts tightening prison oversight.
