History

Historical Context

In 1993 the Intersex Society of North America was founded in Berkeley, California, launching coordinated advocacy that exposed medical harms and demanded policy reform. ISNA reported that roughly 1.7% of global births are intersex, a prevalence comparable to the worldwide share of natural red-hair. President Donald Trump’s 2024 executive order declaring sexes immutable directly revives the binary assumptions ISNA contested during the 1996 American Academy of Pediatrics protest. The ISNA legacy now pressures the World Health Organization, courts, and legislators to end non-consensual surgeries and craft inclusive intersex protections.
