History

Historical Context

The 29 October 1999 Odisha super-cyclone, the strongest recorded in the North Indian Ocean, killed 9,887 people and forced the evacuation of about 150,000 residents while halting thousands of trains and flights. That disaster drives today’s pre-emptive cancellations of flights and trains by IndiGo, Air India and South Central Railway as Cyclone Arnab approaches, prompting shelter activation ahead of the November elections.
