Core Event

On October 21, 2024, Sharad Katiyar, a 47-year-old senior scientist in the programming department of the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) in Bengaluru, jumped from a stairwell window of his residential building in Seegehalli and was declared dead on arrival at a private hospital in K.S. Halli. Police recorded statements from Katiyar’s wife and parents and registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Investigators inspected the scene on October 22 and completed the inquest at the hospital mortuary.

Family Allegations

Katiyar’s family filed a complaint alleging that he had been under “severe work-related stress” for more than a month. They said the pressure persisted despite Katiyar seeking treatment at a private hospital, where he was diagnosed with a depressive episode, and despite a psychiatric consultation at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) on October 21, after which he was prescribed medication. The family contends that continued workplace pressure contributed to his mental health decline.

Agency Response

Krishna Rajendra, Director of Administration and Human Resources at ADA, stated that the agency was unaware of any such issues. He said colleagues he spoke to also had no knowledge of Katiyar’s difficulties and noted that ADA had organized several mental-stress-management programmes over the past year. Rajendra added that employees typically work from around 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and that Katiyar had been attending the office regularly. He cautioned against attributing the death solely to work pressure, suggesting that health-related factors might also have played a role.

Investigation Status

Bengaluru police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding Katiyar’s death. The investigation has so far recorded statements from his immediate family and examined the residential site. No independent verification of the family’s stress-related claims has been released, and the agency’s internal records show no reimbursement claim for Katiyar’s medical consultations.

Verbatim Quotes

  • “We were not aware of any such issue. I spoke to a few of his colleagues, and they also said they were not aware,” — Krishna Rajendra, Director of Administration and Human Resources at the ADA

Data & Statistics

  • Age of the deceased: 47 years.
  • Date of psychiatric consultation: October 21, 2024.

Why It Matters

The incident underscores growing concerns about mental-health pressures in high-technology research environments. While ADA points to existing stress-management initiatives, the family’s allegations raise questions about the effectiveness of such programmes and the mechanisms for employees to report and receive support for mental-health issues. The ongoing police inquiry will determine whether workplace factors contributed to the tragedy.
