Core Launch Details
Indian Railways will expand its premium overnight network with two Vande Bharat Sleeper services. The Delhi-Varanasi route starts on October 31 2026, and the Mumbai-Bengaluru route on November 1 2026. Both trains run on fully air-conditioned 16-coach sets with 823 berths in AC-3-tier, AC-2-tier and First-AC. The Mumbai-Bengaluru service links CSMT in Mumbai with SMVT in Bengaluru via Kalyan, Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Guntakal and Anantapur. The Delhi-Varanasi service travels via Prayagraj Junction and Kanpur Central before reaching New Delhi.
Background & Context
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 17 2026 on the Howrah-Kamakhya corridor. Its performance led the Ministry of Railways to approve the new routes, with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw endorsing the expansion six months ago.
Route, Timings & Frequency
- Delhi-Varanasi (27421/27422): Departs Varanasi 8:50 pm, halts Prayagraj 10:35-10:40 pm, Kanpur 12:40-12:45 am, arrives New Delhi 5:55 am. Return departs New Delhi 9:40 pm, halts Prayagraj 4:45-4:50 am, arrives Varanasi 6:45 am. Operates six days a week, excluding Saturdays.
- Mumbai-Bengaluru (27651/27652): Departs Mumbai 8:10 pm, arrives Bengaluru 11:55 am next day; return departs Bengaluru 7:50 pm, arrives Mumbai 11:55 am. Operates six days a week; Bengaluru-origin service skips Mondays, Mumbai-origin skips Tuesdays.
Fare Structure & Ticketing
Fares are per-passenger, per-kilometre: Rs 2.40 – Rs 3.80 per km depending on class. A 1,000 km AC-3-tier journey costs about Rs 2,400 before taxes. The trains do not offer Reservation-Against-Cancellation tickets; waiting-list passengers receive confirmed seats only after cancellations. Quotas are set for senior citizens, women (45+), pregnant travellers and persons with disabilities.
Train Features & On-Board Amenities
Each set has 11 AC-3-tier, four AC-2-tier and one First-AC coach. Berths feature individual reading lights, curtains, charging points and luggage racks. Upper-berth ladders aid access. The trains include sensor-based “biotoilets” with touch-less flushing, a spacious wash-basin area and a modern pantry. Catering is handled by IRCTC with regional cuisine options.
Official Statements & Responses
- Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted the per-kilometre fare is lower than comparable services in China, Japan and France, which charge Rs 7-Rs 20 per km. He also cited a Rs 60,239 crore fare subsidy in FY 2024-25, averaging a 43 % concession.
- Union Minister of State for Railways V Somanna announced the Mumbai-Bengaluru launch as a “Diwali gift” for Karnataka and Maharashtra, stating the 1,118 km distance will be covered in about 16 hours, roughly eight hours faster than the current fastest service.
Why It Matters / Impact
The sleepers cut travel times by 6-8 hours compared with the Udyan Express (Mumbai-Bengaluru) and Rajdhani Express (Delhi-Varanasi). Faster overnight connectivity benefits business commuters, students, pilgrims and tourists, and eases congestion on existing overnight trains during peak periods.
Conflicting Reports & Gaps
- Travel-time estimates vary: some sources cite 15 h 45 m, others 16 h for Mumbai-Bengaluru.
- Train numbers 27651/27652 (Mumbai-Bengaluru) and 27421/27422 (Delhi-Varanasi) remain “unconfirmed” in several reports.
- Final fare tables and exact stoppage durations at Kanpur Central have not been released.
What’s Next
Ticket booking is expected to open on October 27 2026 via the IRCTC portal and railway counters, subject to the final timetable. Indian Railways will issue a formal notification of the definitive schedule, train numbers and stoppage list before regular operations commence.
