History

Historical Context

When Wimbledon granted Martina Navratilova a wildcard in 2004, she showed veteran appeal by winning a first-round match at age 47—the oldest singles victory—and capturing the mixed-doubles title at the 2006 US Open at 49, adding to her record 59 major championships. Those milestones illustrate how tournaments have long used aging stars to boost viewership and revenue.
